The Best Joke
By Wizera

Today was a special day in the Crystal Realm. The Festival of the Maidens, if Cordelia had translated the calendar correctly. And while there were very few maidens in the traditional sense of the word living in Jhelbor, a celebration was clearly in order. The fact of the matter was that it had been a long time since the tree babies had had anything worth celebrating. For a long stretch of months, nothing seemed to go right, but finally, Cordelia sensed that things were beginning to level out. A few small victories had afforded her enough breathing space to consider some kind of morale booster. Of course, she didn’t want to jinx their good fortune by celebrating their successes outright, so she settled on holding a feast for the next holiday she could think of, which just happened to be the Festival of the Maidens.

She had taken pains to see that everything was perfect for the day. Cris and Cho were given the task of preparing a feast. As arguably the two best chefs in the city (Cherry could bake a mean baked potato, Ginny was great with eggs, and Hood usually managed a decent ice cream, though his flavors were often questionable) Cris and Cho failed to disappoint.

Everything That I Am

Will someone tell me where I belong?
Where I should go
Can someone tell me where I am going wrong?
I need to know

Is this my past here before me
Is this my story unfolding?
It's all here to discover
Everything that I am
Can this be what I've been seeking?
All my life I've been waiting for this
And now these memories
Will they make me see more?

Ooh I want to know where I belong
I want to know where I came from
I want to know the reason why I'm here
The way I am
Feeling the things I feel

Is this my family?
Can it really be them that I see?
My father and mother
And in their arms can it really be me?
All these emotions
I can barely control
Cause the family I had
Is not the family I know

Ooh and I got to know where I belong
I got to know where I came from
I got to know the reason why I'm here
The way I am
Feeling the things I feel

These spirits calling me
Familiar voices haunting
Disappearing, taunting me
This is the choice I must make

Cause I know where I belong
I know where I, I came from
I know the reason why
I must decide
And leave here
The girl I am inside

The future is clear for me to see
To be the one I'm meant to be
Like my father with my head high
Standing tall
And proud of all
That I am

What do you get when you fall in love?
A guy with a pin to burst your bubble
That's what you get for all your trouble
I'll never fall in love again
I'll never fall in love again

What do you get when you kiss a girl
You get enough germs to catch pneumonia
After you do, she'll never phone you
I'll never fall in love again
I'll never fall in love again

Don't tell me what it's all about
'Cause I've been there and I'm glad I'm out
Out of those chains those chains that bind you
That is why I'm here to remind you

What do you get when you give your heart
You get it all broken up and battered
That's what you get, a heart that's shattered
I'll never fall in love again
I'll never fall in love again

Out of those chains those chains that bind you
That is why I'm here to remind you

What do you get when you fall in love?
You only get lies and pain and sorrow
So for at least until tomorrow
I'll never fall in love again
I'll never fall in love again

Take A Chance On Me

If you change your mind, I'm the first in line
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
If you need me, let me know, gonna be around
If you've got no place to go, if you're feeling down
If you're all alone when the pretty birds have flown
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best and it ain't no lie
If you put me to the test, if you let me try

Take a chance on me
(That's all I ask of you honey)
Take a chance on me

We can go dancing, we can go walking, as long as we're together
Listen to some music, maybe just talking, get to know you better
'Cos you know I've got
So much that I wanna do, when I dream I'm alone with you
It's magic
You want me to leave it there, afraid of a love affair
But I think you know
That I can't let go

If you change your mind, I'm the first in line
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
If you need me, let me know, gonna be around
If you've got no place to go, if you're feeling down
If you're all alone when the pretty birds have flown
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best and it ain't no lie
If you put me to the test, if you let me try

Take a chance on me
(Come on, give me a break will you?)
Take a chance on me
Oh you can take your time baby, I'm in no hurry, know I'm gonna get you
You don't wanna hurt me, baby don't worry, I ain't gonna let you
Let me tell you now
My love is strong enough to last when things are rough
It's magic
You say that I waste my time but I can't get you off my mind
No I can't let go
'Cos I love you so

If you change your mind, I'm the first in line
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
If you need me, let me know, gonna be around
If you've got no place to go, if you're feeling down
If you're all alone when the pretty birds have flown
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best, baby can't you see
Gotta put me to the test, take a chance on me
(Take a chance, take a chance, take a chance on me)

Ba ba ba ba baa, ba ba ba ba baa
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best, baby can't you see
Gotta put me to the test, take a chance on me
(Take a chance, take a chance, take a chance on me)

Ba ba ba ba baa, ba ba ba ba baa ba-ba
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me

Wanda: Wanda was born on a distant planet, thousands of years ago, to a race known today as the W Fellowship. Although most of her kind were short-lived, in every generation, two children were born immortal. Wanda was one such individual, although she did not know this because her world blew up when she was still young. Wiped of her memories and frozen in time for years, Wanda eventually recovered and grew up as a Human on Urban Third Earth until her godfather, Prince Wizra of the W Fellowship, located her. Hoping to keep her away from the influence of her godmother, Wizera, he attempted to train Wanda in magic. Her bohemian lifestyle made that utterly impossible. To teach her some responsibility, Wizra sent her to the Order of the Silver Crescent. There, she met Cherry and the two of them struck up a friendship over their mutual distaste for rules and strictures. Wanda is a wild, free spirit. She prefers to be a pacifist except in extreme circumstances. Like Cherry, she loves music and art, but unlike Cherry, she is also very sexually active. Rumors have linked her with everyone from the Fanelian king to the captain of his guard.

Enjolras Marrik: Born of Barnel, the former Hylian god of beauty, and a mortal woman, Enjolras grew up in the time of the Imprisoning War in Hyrule. Being immortal, and endowed with a strength the world had never seen before, Enjolras dedicated his life to helping those who needed his help. He traveled all across the realm for a thousand years, stopping only briefly to raise a family, which was eventually destroyed by an enemy, Enjolras has never known a real home. Although he is not affiliated in any way with the Order of the Silver Crescent, he is aware of its existence and believes that it is a force for good. On several occasions, he has lent his strength to their fight. During her roving days, Cherry often encountered Enjolras. When her colleague Sister Liaza gave birth to a daughter, Cherry very quickly realized that the child was Enjolras' and has dutifully kept the secret.

Emcee and Tara: The Avatars of the Risan goddesses Hopa and Seska (although no one can ever tell which is which), Emcee and Tara are the guardians and protectors of Risa, the largest island of the Alastrian Sea. As such, they are aware of any and all visitors on the island, including Cherry. Emcee, by far the more libral-minded of the two, considered Cherry to be a friend and frequently invited her to various Risan rituals. Tara, far more conservative, viewed Cherry, like all outsiders, with a hint of distrust. Nevertheless, both were fascinated with Cherry's bird curse, calling her a true link between the world of animals and the world of sentient beings. They are also some of the few individuals who can understand Cherry when she is in her bird form.

Lordra: As part of the ancient Ra Family, Lordra is an immortal force of evil, vulnerable only to his own reflection. Cherry and her band of childhood friends went on several ill-advised adventures, one of which involved locating some buried treasure. It was during this adventure that they crossed paths with the Ra Family, in the form of Lordra. The children managed to get a hold of a magical sword, buried deep in the heart of a cave. Unforutnately, Lordra also had his eye set on the sword and it was only by the cleverness of the children, forcing him to look at his own reflection, that Lordra relented. As a person, Lordra is domineering and manipulative. He has a strong interest in Cherry's friend Wanda that often leads him to try and interfere with the workings of the Order of the Silver Crescent. Even vampires are not enough to stand up to Lordra, however, and it is only Cherry's experiences in dealing with him in the past that have managed to keep the good guys alive, for now.

Cordelia Estwynde: Cherry's latest flame, Cordelia was the consort of the headmaster at Cherry's school. Although they met at a tavern when Cordelia was on the arm of another man, it was the headmaster who would eventually bring the two of them together, recruiting Cherry to give Cordelia night lessons in literacy. A young, wealthy widow, Cordelia was drawn to Cherry and soon became her lover. Despite an outwardly delicate appearance, Cordelia is a very resilient individual who merely prefers to avoid nasty situations. She is loyal and loving, although surprisingly sensual for a Hylian.

Maurice Kazan: The headmaster of the Hyrule's finest school of magical training, Maurice rescued Cherry when she was a child, trapped in her bird state, and helped her to control her strange powers. Breaking with conventions, he allowed Cherry, a Human, to studying in his school, alongside some of the wealthiest Hylians. He perceived, however, that Cherry's destiny was great and dangerous and so, when her past caught up with her, he encouraged her to leave the school and discover her own path. This path would, in time, lead Cherry right back where she started, but more powerful and self-assured than before. Maurice is something of a father figure to Cherry. He is also the only person in the world who ever refers to her by the name Samantha, but only in private.

Dear William: William--alternatively known as Will, Bill, or Dear William--met Cherry when they both entered their first year of magical training. Though they were housed in different parts of the school, the two of they found a deep connection. Dear William was the first person Cherry trusted with the secrets of her past. Over the next three years, the two of them had many misadventures in the halls of the school, developing a fond puppy love for one another. William was too embarrassed, however, to tell his mother that he was friends with a Human, something Cherry would not discover for another ten years. While Cherry left school early, Dear William continued on, winning top marks and graduating with highest honors. Despite his book smarts, he had little in the way of practical application skills, so he returned to the school, this time teaching arithmetic. He and Cherry reunited, though Dear William soon became engaged to a beautiful blond girl who was everything Cherry was not. Their love turned into a deep friendship and eventually, Dear William found the courage to introduce Cherry to his domineering mother.

Princess Amanda Harkin: The crown princess of Hyrule, Amanda and her family are patrons of Maurice Kazan's school. Amanda herself, a powerful Hylian, trained there until the war between Hyrule and Catalan brought her back to her duties as princess. Eventually, Amanda married the crown prince of Catalan and bore him three children, but she remained close to the school at all times. When she suffered a bipolar breakdown and ran away, Maurice charged his staff with the task of finding her again. Owing to her bird form, Cherry was able to locate the princess, living with a lover, the captain of the Hylian guard. After agonizing, Cherry elected not to tell anyone what she had seen. This favor to Amanda was repaid several years later when Amanda, who actually knew about Cherry's bird form, allowed her full access to the royal archives. Amanda is a very difficult and temperamental person, but a good friend.

Kallista Summer: Kallista is the Hylian goddess of beauty who has chosen to live among mortals. A great proprietress, she owns the Venus Boutique and the Dancing Knight Tavern, and also dedicates ample funds to good causes. Among these good causes, she has provided funding for the education of a young Hylian boy, named Damon, at Shiz. Damon is one of Cherry's students and she is personally invested in him, often reporting on his progress to Kallista and her Human husband, James Miller. Kallista herself is a bright burst of positive energy. She has friends among every race. She and her husband James have many children who, in spite of their half-breed status, are slated to attend Shiz.

Tress Ogawa: The Hylians believe in every generation there are three great Heroes. Among those Heroes is the Hero of Destiny. When Tress was ten, she was chosen by the goddesses to serve in this position. Her training, which took place in part, at the school, was interrupted by the sudden death of her parents and sister. Despite the fact that her fate was ultimately tied to Hyrule, both Maurice and Cherry encouraged her to travel to other countries, to learn as much as she could about the world. Even though her past is marred with tragedy, Tress is a very outgoing and fun-loving girl. She delights in pranks and never wastes an opportunity to learn something new. Currently, she lives in the kingdom of Hyrule where she works with Prince Connor Corbel to rebel against his evil father, the king.

Catalina Pike: Known by several aliases including Wicked Bitch of the West, Cold Shower Cat, and Lady Darla, Catalina Pike is one of three surviving brown-eyed Hylians. After an extremely difficult childhood in Saria, the backwater village of Hyrule, Catalina grew up to become a vicious assassin. Although considered a freak for her brown eyes, Catalina is a deft warrior, skilled in the art of seduction, and a talented actress. She is generally able to pass herself off as a noblewoman, but many of the people in Cherry's life, including Cordelia and Tress, know the truth about her. In spite of her violent nature, Catalina is also known to be surprisingly philanthropic and has, in the past, anonymously funded the education of several students in Maurice Kazan's school.

Sister Liaza: Born to a farming family, Liaza was taken from her home by missionaries at an early age and trained to be the Messenger of the Sages, a high ranking position within Hylian religion. Aside from these duties, Liaza became a missionary teacher, a position she eventually left after losing her faith, not in the goddesses, but in the missionary bureaucracy getting in the way of belief. Maurice took her in, giving her a position within the school. He also sheltered her after she gave birth to a daughter, Octavia, fathered by a Hylian deity. Liaza and Cherry often clash when it comes to their differing philosophies of education, particularly when it comes to religious versus secular explanations of life. Nevertheless, they share a mutual respect for one another.

Erik Carrière: Little, if anything, is actually known of the mortal life of this deranged and obsessive psychopath. The rumors abound: He was a circus freak who killed the ringmaster; he was the illegitimate child of the world's greatest soprano; he was the master builder for a monarch who lived thousands of miles away from any known civilization. What is known about Erik is, by the time he became a vampire, he had learned some dark, long-forgotten magik and his face was covered with lacerations which would remain with him for all eternity. At some unknown year in his immortal life, Cherry Reyer caught him murdering a man. For unknown reasons, he decided not to kill her as well, but rather, to turn her into a bird. She spent many years in his lair, learning about his abilities and movements. When he learned that his spell had been broken, he dedicated several years to hunting her down before vanishing into parts unknown.

Angie: Where Angie came from is as much a mystery as where Erik came from. When Cherry first encountered her, Angie was already Erik's faithful thrall, doing his bidding without hesitation or question. Sometime in the years Cherry spent at school, Erik and Angie had a falling out, at which point Angie fled. Years later, Cherry found out that Angie had been deeply in love with Erik and, when he didn't return his affection, she betrayed him by releasing some of his prisoners.

Artemis Seth: The leader of the Order of the Silver Crescent, Artemis is a slightly-deranged vampire with the uncanny ability to read people. The youngest of three vampire sisters, all sired by their own father, Artemis dedicated her unlife to fighting against the things that go bump in the night by bringing together mortals and immortals with extraordinary abilities. Artemis herself is a formidable warrior, but prefers to keep a more diplomatic position within the Order. Her psychic dreams are often opened up to the interpretation of the mortal witches in the Order, including Cherry.

Olivia "Denise" Turpin: Generally going by Denise for seemingly no reason at all, she is the friendliest punk in the world. After a few failed stints as a bartender, Denise was convinced, by her adoptive sire, to join the Order and put her talents of "hitting things real hard" to good use. Born a noblewoman, Denise was unknowingly bred to become a vampire by a powerful man named Darius. Unfortunately, one of Darius' rivals caught wind of his plans and sired Denise first, abandoning her to the wilds where she was picked up and raised by another vampire named Areous. Denise's wreckless, rebel behavior led her into lots of trouble as she went searching for her real sire and she left many bodies behind, including that of Darius. She pulled a complete one eighty on her life, however, when she saw one of her own, dearest friends, travel down an even darker path which nearly led to her destroying the world. After that, Denise reformed, joined the Order, and has served it faithfully ever since.

Jonas Mayenca: As a mortal, he was the betrothed fiance of Lady Olivia Turpin. Unfortunately, the same man who killed her decided to come after Jonas as well. He was turned into a vampire and abandoned, only to be found and "brought up" by a man called Darius. Only a few short years into his immortal life, Jonas caught sight of his beloved fiance murdering Darius. He spent years trying to track her down, becoming a bruiser along the way. Eventually, the Order of the Silver Crescent helped Jonas to reunite with the love of his life, in exchange for a pledge of service to their cause. Jonas is incredibly laid back. He and Cherry often have ridiculous contests with one another, seeing who can hold the most grapes in their mouths or who can go the longest hopping on one foot.

Chrissy: Although connected to Cherry through the Order, Chrissy actually met her when she was a child, before either of them would encounter Erik. During her time as a bird, Cherry was under the impression that Chrissy had died. It was only years later, when Cherry joined the Order, that she learned Chrissy had been turned into a vampire by Angie, at Erik's bidding. At first, their friendship was very tenuous, but eventually, they fell back into old habits and became steadfast friends again. Both of them share a deep love of music and spend a lot of time listening to phonographs. In the Order, Chrissy serves as an ambassador, using her charms and her wits to collect information on various hot spots about which Artemis has developed an interest.

The Father: Despite what the name implies, the Father is actually a woman, the grandsire of Artemis and her sisters. Although older than dirt, it seems, the Father's real identity and history prior to four hundred years ago is completely lost. What is known is that one day, she woke up from a deep sleep and, dissatisfied with the world, decided to remake it, bringing it under her command with her own vampiric bloodline serving as her disciples. Unfortunately, the Father's experiments in mixing mortal and vampire blood didn't sit well with Artemis, who eventually splintered off to form her own cult, the Order of the Silver Crescent, dedicated to thwarting the Father and her followers.

Diana and Selene: Artemis' sisters, both in her mortal life, and immortal life, who have both taken a stand against the Father. While Diana is a loyal part of the Order, who travels the realm to do Artemis' bidding, Selene is an anarch who doesn't particularly care about good or evil and is generally just looking for a good time. Unfortunately, her good times are usually at the expense of others. Cherry and Diana are good friends who get along, sharing a love of dancing and music and peace. Selene, however, cannot stand Cherry and often threatens to turn her into a vampire just because it would be funny.

Other Vampires of the Order:
Ariel Lysia -- A thoroughly blood-thirsty child vampire.
Elsbeth Lennox -- Artemis' bodyguard.
Malcolm -- Elsbeth's husband and a diplomat.
Elizabeth Alexander -- An artist.
Joseph Penn -- An ambassador to other cults with similar aims.
Prince Liam -- A detective and soldier for the Order. Not actually a prince.
Milton -- A bruiser who does his best to keep vampire hunters away from Order business.
Gabriel -- A slightly batty old vampire who can control animals.
Areous -- An ambassador and peace-maker among various vampire sects.
Madeline Isis -- One of the Father's experiments, a dhampir rescued by the Order.
Joe Sparkela -- Cherry's piano teacher.
birdyballerina: (Default)
Fatima Merali: The head witch of the Order of the Silver Crescent's resident coven, Fatima was the one who brought Cherry into the fold and made her aware of the fact that the man who has cursed her was, in fact, a vampire. Fatima's family has served the Order for generations, her mother as leader of the coven before and her grandmother before that and so on, down the line. Fatima is a strong individual with very fierce opinions and morals. Since she and Cherry share most of these ideals, they got along great. Although Fatima is the leader, she is not the most powerful witch in the Order, which is occasionally a point of contention. Nevertheless, the majority of the other Human witches are fiercely loyal, Cherry included.

Cardinally Firman: Perhaps Cherry's first friend, Cardinally was the self-appointed leader of the tramp children that took Cherry in after she left foster care. Cardinally was one of the few children in the group who was not an orphan or child of a broken home. Her father was the owner of the Beigor opera house and as such, Cardinally knew the ins and outs of the theatre which eventually led to Cherry's intense passion for music. It was Cardinally who dubbed Cherry with her nickname and she has kept it ever since. Additionally, Cardinally was one of the first "bird children" who also became a red bird, like Cherry. As the children grew up, Cardinally became increasingly unstable, due, as it turned out, to the presense of vampires. Despite her occasionally off-center attitude, Cardinally developed imto perhaps the most powerful witch of the group.

Emily Staret: Another witch in the Order. As a child, Emily and her entire family were pulled into the underworld and put through a decidedly hellish ordeal. Although they were eventually rescued, the emotional scars left on Emily's psyche would last her for all time. She grew up an outsider, completely devoid of life. Eventually, she was discovered by the Order, who realized that Emily had returned to the world with traces of underworld magic on her, making her in essense, a powerful necromancer. She was brought into the Order, and taught how to manage her powers. The emotional pains is still healing for her.

Phoebe and Seki: Two of Cherry's traveling companions from the Order. They went on various missions across Hyrule together and eventually, Cherry and Phoebe became lovers. It turned out, however, that Phoebe was also having an affair with Seki. Eventually, Phoebe and Seki ran off together to elope, leaving behind their mission, the Order, and poor Cherry.

Blossom: When Cherry joined up with the other tramp children, she formed many friendships that eventually faded. Her relationship with one particular girl, another one of the bird children, would go on for a long while. Currently Blossom, the girl has gone through many names, including Michele, Ursela, Rachel, Strawberry, and Mimi. Like Cherry, Blossom turns into a red bird and enjoys traveling constantly, never settling down for too long. Unlike Cherry, Blossom's journeys are all made in the pursuit of a "good time." She is flakey, promiscuous, free-spirited, and above all, kind.

James Miller: James is the self-proclaimed "king of the dancing jesters." A runaway from a life of servitude to an evil queen, he ended up a sensation in Hyrule. On occasion, Cherry writes songs for him. She enjoys going to see him perform in taverns and often tries to imitate his unique and exciting dances.

Velvet Daae: Another one of the bird children, Velvet and her older sister were orphaned at a young age, at which point they both took up positions in the opera house. Velvet eventually joined Cardinally, Cherry, and the other tramp children, getting into trouble with the vampire community below. When the dust finally settled and the children were all restored to some sense of normalcy, Velvet became a ballerina, a feat Cherry was never able to accomplish due to her weight. It was because of this, that Cherry would end up dedicating her life to more rustic dancing. A friendly rivalry formed between Cherry's style of dancing and Velvet's style, but the two of them remained friends. Velvet eventually abandoned magic all together, but she had the second form of a blue bird.
